Bare spots and thinning turf have a way of getting worse on their own. Every gap in your lawn is an open invitation to weeds, to erosion, and to more thinning as the surrounding grass loses the density that protects it. But the fix usually isn't tearing out the lawn and starting over. It's overseeding.
Overseeding introduces new grass seed directly into your existing lawn. The new seedlings fill bare patches, thicken sparse areas, and refresh turf that's simply gotten old. Grass plants have lifespans too, and an aging lawn loses vigor even with good care. The result is a denser stand of grass that looks better, wears better, and defends itself against weeds naturally.
The catch is that seed only germinates where it touches soil. Scattered on top of thatch or compacted ground, most of it simply never grows, which is why how you overseed matters as much as whether you do.

Timing carries extra weight in our climate. New seedlings need consistent moisture and moderate temperatures to establish, which makes early fall the star window here: warm soil, cooling air, and a full irrigation season behind the young grass before summer heat returns. Spring works too with attentive watering. And because nearly all our lawns are irrigated (and therefore compaction-prone), the aeration pairing isn't just a nice-to-have here. It's the difference between seed that grows and seed that feeds the birds.

Lawn overseeding FAQs
When should I overseed?
Early fall is ideal in Central Washington; spring is the runner-up. We'll time it so the new grass has the friendliest possible establishment window.
Do I really need aeration with it?
Strictly speaking, no. But practically, it's the highest-impact upgrade you can make. Seed-to-soil contact drives germination, and aeration channels provide exactly that.
How long until the lawn looks better?
Germination begins within a couple of weeks in good conditions; visible thickening follows over the weeks after. Full blend-in typically takes a season of normal care.
Will overseeding fix a lawn that keeps thinning?
Only if the cause is addressed too. If compaction, fungus, or insects are behind the thinning, we'll flag it and fix that first. Otherwise the new grass meets the same fate as the old.
